The Real Reason Most EAs Fail
In 9 out of 10 cases, the EA itself isn't the problem. The problem is how it's used. Here are the 10 most common mistakes.
Mistake 1: Lot Size Too Large
Setting 0.5 lot on a $500 account (10% risk per trade). One losing streak of 5 trades = account down 50%. Use the 1% rule: max 0.01 lot per $100 of capital for XAUUSD.
Mistake 2: No News Filter
Running the EA through FOMC, CPI, or NFP without pausing. News can cause 50–100 pip spikes in seconds that bypass SL. Always enable a news filter or manually pause during high-impact events.
Mistake 3: Wrong Timeframe
Using an EA designed for M1 on H1, or vice versa. The EA's logic is calibrated for specific timeframe behavior. Using it on the wrong timeframe invalidates its edge.
Mistake 4: Ignoring Spread
Testing on backtest with 0.3 pip spread, then running live with a broker that charges 2.0 pips. This alone can turn a profitable system into a losing one.
Mistake 5: Turning Off EA After Losses
Panic-stopping the EA after a 3-trade losing streak (which is statistically normal for any system). The next 5 trades might all be winners — you won't be there for them.
Mistake 6: Constantly Changing Settings
Tweaking parameters weekly based on recent results. You're optimizing for the past, not the future. Stick to the settings that were backtested unless you have a data-driven reason to change.
Mistake 7: Running on Wrong Broker
Some brokers have extreme requotes, high overnight swap rates, or poor execution. The EA may work perfectly but your broker's conditions eat all the profit.
Mistake 8: No VPS — Running on Home PC
If your home PC restarts, loses internet, or enters sleep mode, the EA stops working. Trades may be left open without management. A $10/month VPS prevents this completely.
Mistake 9: Using Demo Results to Judge Live Performance
Demo accounts often have instant execution and perfect spreads. Live trading will always differ slightly — spreads widen, fills are at market price, not demo's theoretical price.
Mistake 10: Not Reading the EA Documentation
Every EA has specific requirements: minimum balance, recommended pairs, news filter settings, optimal broker type (ECN vs market maker). Ignoring these is like buying a car and not reading the manual about the fuel type.
